Every 3rd Thursday in Germantown (Schnitzelburg, to be specific) The Louisville Old Time Squares Association (LOTSA) hosts a hoedown that takes place at the AmVets #9 Post (1567 South Shelby Street). The doors open at 7, practice dances start at 7:30, and full on dancing goes from 8 - 10:30.
Never been to a hoedown before? Don't worry - all you need is a good attitude! All dances are taught. No experience necessary! This is a SOCIAL EVENT, so if your two left feet have you weary of joining the fun, put your reservations aside and go have a great time.
Hoedowns originated in Appalachia and typically feature a string band (accent on the fiddle!) with a caller who "calls the dance" or tells you to swing your partner and do-si-do. The caller is important for guiding both newbies and the most experienced dancers around the dance floor. The dances incorporate the entire dance floor, so you may find yourself locking arms with a stranger or forming soul-train type of lines. It isn't rigorous dancing, but you can control how much effort you put into the dances.
This week the featured caller is T-Claw and the band is The Corn Potatoes from Detroit.
Word on the street is that this is a fun event for singles (who knows who will ask you to do a jig with them!), groups of friends who just want to boogie down, and couples who are looking for a fun date night.
If you get thirsty during the dance, visit the AmVet bar for a beverage. Whether you need a little water to hydrate after bustin' a move on the dance floor or you need a drink with a higher ABV to loosen up your dancing feet, the vets behind the bar have you covered. Keep in mind, all workers at the AmVets Post are volunteers, so your tips are greatly appreciated, and the bar is CASH ONLY!
Don't forget - Danny Mac will be serving his delicious pizza all night (pizza cost extra...sorry, folks!). Indulge in a slice of pizza and hit the dance floor - it will be the most guilt free piece of pizza you have ever eaten!
